Homeless Children Plan Now Ready to Roll

We've mentioned our plan to rehouse homeless children several times on this blog. Well, now it's ready.

It's taken almost 18-months, but we finally have a viable, achievable plan that can give every homeless parent with young children a new roof, and the chance to give those children a far better future.

We've faced quite a few problems in defining how the plan should work so it will help as many people as we can find, and now there's a new one - Letting them know it's ready.

We've contacted shelters and posted notices on social media, but the feedback has been modest. If you know a family in need, or have a friend who works at a Shelter, please pass the word. With some cooperation from the Banks and the Shelters we can help every family who needs it.

But we can’t hope to do it alone...

New Report says Homeless Shelters in High Demand

The annual report from the Coalition for the Homeless makes pretty bleak reading; Their research proves homeless shelters are now serving more people that at any time in their history.

One chilling fact shows that 22,712 children slept in a Shelter in January.

And that's just in New York.

Our project will help solve that. Perhaps not before time...

SXSW Gives the Homeless a Chance

There are more than 36,000 homeless people in Texas. During the annual music extravaganza that is SXSW, local non-profits give some of them the one thing they all really want - A chance to rebuild and regain their lives...

Help Us Help Them

Our project to rehouse homeless children is now moving forward.

For the last 8-months we have searched for the seed funds to make this a reality, and we found nothing but implacable disinterest and risible attempts at ID fraud.

So we’re now prepping a crowdfunding plan to raise the funding ourselves.

The project can house as many people as might need the chance, at no cost to them or the Shelters in which they might now be living. So if you know a family in need please give them this link.

We launch in April. With your help, the first clients should be in their new houses by June :)

Compassion versus Conviction

Over the last ten years, one county in Florida has spent more than $5-million putting homeless people in jail.

Here's the stupid: It was the same 37 people.

The council of Ocheola County allowed local law-enforcement to arrest and imprison the same 37 people 1,250 times, at a cost to local taxpayers of more than $100 each time, for minor offences like panhandling and sleeping in public places.

For perhaps half that amount the Council could have acquired a suitable piece of Real Estate and given those people a real home, not a criminal record.

It's news like this that makes the compulsion to do our homelessness project just unbearably worse...

Crowdfunding Plan seeks Social Media Wiz...

As you guys know, we've been trying to find a partner for the homeless children project for over six months. We've just been let down by yet another who claimed they had both the money and the interest...then disappeared.

This is clearly not tolerable. Every day we spend searching for the means, 2.7-million children remain trapped in shelters from which they have little chance of a short-term escape. Our project will give them both an exit and a complete education, so we can't waste any more time.

To avoid going in circles with more alleged partners, we're going to create the seed funds through a Crowdfunding raise. It seems to be the only way to raise both the funds and awareness of the project.

Here's the snag: We've never done a Crowdfunder before and have no clear idea how one is done. If anyone has, or knows of such a being we'd love to meet them. It's a paid gig. We especially need help with the social media aspect. It's a crucial element of any raise, so we can't make mistakes.

Farewell to a Rare and True Friend

We just learned that one of the few people who always believed in our project, Trevor Vonk, died of a heart attack last night. He was just 57.

Trevor was a true friend with a great sense of humour, and knew more details about more Hollywood movies than anyone we've even heard of. He was going to join the project as CFO when we begin operations next month.

Replacing him will be close to impossible.

Costa Mesa Homeowners Put Wrong Values First

The City Council in Costa Mesa are mulling the idea of allowing low-income housing for homeless folks to be built in the area.

As many as fifty people could be helped by the proposed facility - until now, Costa Mesa has had nothing like it.

And the response from local homeowners?...

'It could pose a safety risk and hurt home values, they said.'

These self-absorbed fiscal myopics wouldn't last two weeks on the streets. But they're happy to let everyone else stay marooned on the curb, as long as it means their own homes don't lose value.

Homelessness on the Rise, SNAP cuts adding pain

A new survey says more than 20,000 people are homeless, in LA alone. Over 2,000 of them are under 15.

The SNAP / Food Stamps program is due to be cut by more than $4-billion, and the recent Budget deal by Congress means millions of people who have been unemployed for more than a year will lose their benefits right after Christmas.

So it's about to get a lot worse.

To be faced with a problem I know we can fix, and still be denied the means to even vaguely address it is frustrating to the point of incoherence...

Our Veterans Deserve More Respect

We couldn't agree more. To reward those who risked their lives to protect this nation with a park-bench and hand-outs is unjust and a national disgrace...

Homeless Children Project

In January of this year, 22,712 children under the age of ten slept in homeless shelters. Just in New York. Nationally, the number is nearly 3-million.

We are going to give those children a way out of this unwarranted misery and provide them with a new home, from which they can gain the education they need to build the life and the future they have little chance of seeing if nothing is done.

To us the solution is clear: The Banks currently hold over 3-million foreclosed homes. We are going to purchase those homes and donate them to Shelters and homelessness-related Non-profits. Their staff will then help clients with children to move in and get their lives back.

There is no cost to the Shelters, the parents or anyone who helps them.

It gets better: While the project can help thousands of people it will not cost the taxpayers a dime. Quite the reverse; Even if we only reached half of the 2.76-million children now in Shelters and their parents only got minimum-wage jobs, the nation would still gain over $5-billion in new revenue from their taxes in the first two years alone.

But the benefits to the children are the biggest motive, and those should be huge.

We believe this project is among the most formative investments in childhood any organization could ever attempt; Children are the very fabric of this nation's future, and to believe they could fulfill this pivotal destiny without a decent education or the emotional stability of a home of their own is both irrational and unsupported by all current research.

A solution, even one that might sound as 'left-field' as this, is desperately needed. It will turn hundreds of untended eyesores into clean, well-kept homes filled with children whose lives have finally regained their potential.

And we believe such proactive support of those who must eventually inherit this land is both an imperative task and our communal duty.
